You may think that running is the best kind of exercise. That works for many people. Other fitness buffs swear the benefits of lifting weights are the best kind of exercise. That may be true. However, rowing machines are gaining popularity because they’re durable, relatively inexpensive, and provide great workouts. Rowing a boat on a lake – is difficult, however with consistency you will see positive results within a few weeks, therefore this makes a rower a great option for a home workout.
The fitness benefits of using a rowing machine are much the same as rowing on water. For instance, rowing improves cardiovascular fitness. When using a rowing machine your heart rate rises, and this causes the heart to pump more blood to the muscles to deliver energy and nutrients to the cells. Several types of rowers come with an electronic monitors so you can keep track of beats per minute, calories burned per minute, and so on.
Entire Body Workout
Virtually every muscle group in the body is engaged while rowing helping you to get stronger over your entire body. The muscles of the lower body, including calves, quadriceps, and hamstrings are fully engaged during the drive phase, i.e., the movement that propels the boat to the finish line. Then, you’re exercising the core muscles (abs and obliques) and finally the upper body and shoulders. Even the wrists and hands become stronger due to gripping the handles of the rowing machine.
Running has definite health benefits, but regardless of how comfortable the shoes are the feet take a serious beating because they absorb more force during running than any other activity. That problem is eliminated during a rowing exercise because the feet are constantly placed on the foot pads when using the machine. Likewise, there is no excessive pressure applied to the ankles, knees, hands or shoulders, all of which take a long time to heal if injured.
If you want to lose weight, rowing is probably the best exercise you can do. Walking and/or running will be tough on the joints, and if you get hurt then training to lose the weight becomes difficult. Treadmills are certainly a good option, but they don’t work as many muscle groups at the same time as a rowing machine. Start slowly and progress to more intensive workouts each time. Rowing inside the house is the perfect solution if you feel self-conscious about exercising outside.
The mental benefits of rowing shouldn’t be understated. It goes without saying that the body and mind are linked and if you’re in poor physical shape, the mind will be in a similar state. The reverse is also true. Rowing forces you to stay focused and complete an exercise regimen. Rowing isn’t easy and it will take time and dedication to get in shape. Even so, this kind of exercise doesn’t have to be solitary. It can be done in groups to make it more fun! The gym is a great place to find fellow rowers.
